2017 PA Community on Transition Conference - Pathways to Success: Transitioning into Tomorrow Together

The primary purpose of this conference is to expand the capacity of schools, agencies and communities, in partnership with youth, young adults and families, in promoting the successful transition of youth/young adults with disabilities to post-school outcomes of employment, post-secondary education and training, community participation and healthy lifestyles. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about effective practices to assist youth/young adults with disabilities to explore possibilities, take advantage of their opportunities, and actively advocate for their future.

The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) was signed into law in July of 2014. There were significant changes as a result of WIOA that will be discussed during this webinar. Specific emphasis will focus on Title IV of WIOA that re-authorized the Rehabilitation Act, the governing legislation for the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR).

During this webinar, targeted for professionals who are involved with obtaining and providing work experiences for youth and young adults with disabilities, information will be presented on the Fair Labor Standards Act, in particular Section 64c08 and the PA Child Labor laws as they apply to youth with disabilities. Participants will learn how the Federal and PA State laws affect work experiences for youths aged 14-21.

Assistive Technology (AT) is an essential component of success for transition-age students with complex needs. Students who have the opportunity to experience and use a variety of tools in school for such tasks as communication, organization, navigation, and recall are more likely to transition successfully to adult life. This session will provide participants with a fresh perspective on the role of AT in transition as well as provide guiding questions and suggestions for addressing AT during multiple points throughout IEP development.
